John Lenz of Perry, for 10 years the maintenance director at the McCreary Community Building in Perry, was treated to a going-away party Friday by the staff and many patrons of the MCB and other city workers.

Lenz will soon take up a new position at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds near Mansfield, Mo. The company, owned and operated by the Jere Gettle family, sells “nearly 2,000 varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs — the largest selection of heirloom varieties in the U.S.,” according to the company’s website.

The new job will permit Lenz to put his horticulture degree to use more fully than he could with the city of Perry, he said, but he will miss his Perry friends.

“I’m really going to miss a lot of these guys,” Lenz said Friday at his party, which included a hearty breakfast and some delicious cinammon rolls. “The seniors have been a hoot. They’ve made the job a lot of fun.”

The Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds facility lies about five miles north of Mansfield, Mo., the home of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum.
