Kruger narrowly misses spot at state tourney as Jayettes bow out

ADEL — Nevada and Creston claimed the top two spots Monday at River Valley Golf Course to earn spots in the Class 3A girls golf state tourney, with Perry finishing fourth in the 12-team field.

The five lowest individuals also advanced, with Perry junior Alyssa Kruger finishing only two strokes high of moving on. Kruger led Perry with a 47-45–92 to end her day just short of the advancing quintet.

Claire Ausman of Nevada fired a 39-43–82 to earn top recognition, with Creston’s Ashton Carter second at 43-40–83. Completing the top five were Creston’s Sophia Groumoutis (43-44–87), ADM’s Lindsay Lange (46-42–88) and Pella’s Lauren Van Wyk (45-44–89).

Perry seniors Sarah Sweet and Brooke Huntington finished 2-3 for the Jayettes in their final prep matches. Sweet fired a 49-48–97 and Huntington a 51-50–101, with a 59-54–113 from sophomore Madyson Hill also used for the team total of 403.

Also playing for Perry, but not having their scores used for the team sum, were junior Skylar Cunningham and sophomore Delaney Eiteman, who had cards of 59-64–123 and of 58-70–128, respectively.

Nevada led all teams with a 374, with Creston close by at 378. Pella was third at 396 and Perry fourth at 403, with DC-G (435), Norwalk (441), Carlisle (443), ADM (445), Ballard (448), Winterset (488), Bondurant-Farrar (527) and Knoxville (552) also in action.

In addition to Ausman, Chloe Davis (46-46–92), Emma Griffin (50-50–100) and Kolby Rewerts (53-47–100) scored for Nevada, with Hayley Osman (49-48–97) and Syndey Hurtsoek (55-56–111) joining Carter and Groumoutis in scoring for Creston.

Other low scorers were: Sarah Rauschenberg (DC-G, 50-49–99), Camri Vivone (NOR, 52-50–102), Macey Brower (CRL, 45-51–96), Lauren Smith (BAL, 50-56–106), Corry Pickering (WNT, 53-62–115), Briley Hick (B-F, 59-59–118) and Maggie Leavitt (53-53–106).
