Janier Puente’s two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh plated Kyle Nevitt and Kade VanKirk and lifted Perry to a 3-2 win over ADM in Raccoon River Conference baseball Friday.

ADM (3-4, 1-4) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third off Perry starter Kyle Nevitt. Joe Sloss walked and moved up a base on a one-hit single from Chase Eddie. Colin Gavin’s RBI-single plated Sloss, with a two-out single from Sam Kornstad loading the bases. A walk sent in a second run, with Nevitt inducing a fly out to limit the damage and strand three runners.

Will Whiton’s two singles, a Zach Roberts base hit and an Adan Medina triple were the only hits in the first five innings off Kornstad, who appeared in full control.

Roberts changed that with a solo home run to left in the seventh to bring Perry (5-2, 2-1) within a run.

ADM’s offense was completely stifled in the final four frames after Whiton entered to replace Nevitt on the mound. The senior southpaw did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out seven, including fanning the side in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Nevitt’s one-out single to left started Perry’s rally in the seventh. VanKirk had a gritty at-bat, fouling off several pitches and taking two borderline balls to draw a walk, an outcome that upset an emotional Kornstad.

The effect on the ADM pitcher was shown almost immediately, as Puente crushed a 1-0 pitch into the gap in right-center for a triple that plated both the tying and winning run and sent the Bluejay dugout pouring onto Progressive Field to mob Puente.

The win was awarded to Whiton, with Nevitt receiving a no-decision after tossing three frames. He allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits and four walks and a hit batsman while striking out one.

Kornstad hit one batter and walked one in 6-2/3 frames. He yielded three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six.

Perry will play in the Nodaway Valley Tournament at Greenfield today before hosting Carlisle Monday.
