Gentleman farmer Lawrence Bice of rural Ogden marked the 83rd anniversary of his birth Friday by treating the congregated Perry Perk denizens to coffee and sweet rolls.

“I feel pretty good,” Bice said. “No complaints.”

He was praised by his fellow octogenarians and others for the firmness of his grip and the straightness of his gait.

Bice is an active member of the Optimist Club International. He and his beloved wife, Helen, who died in 2009, famously toured Russia and the Ukraine as part of an agricultural sharing initiative prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, an evil empire.

Lawrence said he lost his cousin, Larry Bice, about one month ago. He said they exchanged misdirected mail with one another for many years. He said a woman called him a few weeks ago and said, “Is this Lawrence Bice?”

“Yes,” he said.

“Are you sure?” she asked. She wanted to confirm that he was the Lawrence Bice who is still among the living. Given the busyness of his days, there is plenty of life left in this Lawrence.

Enjoying Friday’s birthday fare courtesy of Lawrence Bice were, clockwise from center, Jim George, Gary Becker, Andy Bambrick, Bice, Charlie Thompson, Lou Hoger, Bob Rounds, Dan Spellman, Jim Haas and Roger Emmert.
