Lions hand Panther girls first loss

URBANDALE — Des Moines Christian used a fast start to seize a double-digit early lead and then hold on to topple the Panorama girls from the ranks of the unbeaten during their WCAC showdown Friday.

The Lions (10-2, 8-0) roared to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter, then added a basket to their margin to take a 29-17 edge into the locker room. The Panthers (11-1, 8-1) faced a 40-27 deficit with eight minutes to play and were unable to flip the score in taking the loss.

DMC sank 9-of-21 3-pointers and were 18-of-38 (47 percent) overall from the floor while limiting sixth-ranked Panorama to 13-of-51 (25 percent) from the floor, a clip that included only 5-of-28 shooting beyond the 3-point arc.

Miah Potratz drained four treys in scoring 14 points for the hosts. Kaili Lawson had 10 points and 11 rebounds with Emma Veenstra nearly pulling off a triple-double with eight points, nine caroms and 10 assists.

Moriah Prewitt and Megan Miller added six points apiece for DMC, with Ellie Schlapkohl scoring three points.

Bailey Beckman had seven points and Ella Waddle six to lead Panorama. Payton Beckman, Morgan Johnk, Anna Holloway and Brooke Halterman each tallied five points, with Lydia Knapp accounting for four points.

Payton Beckman had seven rebounds and three steals, Johnk seven boards and three assists and Knapp five caroms.

Panorama hosts Madrid Tuesday and AC/GC Friday as WCAC play continues.
