Lions rally late to escape with win over Hawks in eight innings

W-G's Kendra Husmann muscles a single into right field against Perry Saturday. The Hawks fell to host DM Christian Thursday.

URBANDALE — Three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth looked to have given Woodward-Granger a come-from-behind 7-6 win over host Des Moines Christian. The Lions had other ideas.

DMC had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh when a base hit tied the game at 7-all and left runners on each bag. W-G hurler Riley Jamison turned back the potential game-winning rally and forced extra innings by inducing two fly outs in the infield, but she could do nothing to stop an infield error with two outs and the bases again loaded in the eighth as the hosts made off with the WCC victory.

Jamison tossed 7-2/3 innings in the circle. She allowed eight runs (only three were earned) on 13 hits and did not issue a walk or strike out a batter.

W-G had scored once in the first inning and twice in the second, but two Lion runs in their half of the first and three in the second gave the hosts a 5-3 lead. A run in the fourth put DMC ahead, 6-3, but W-G tied the game with three tallies in the fifth before taking a brief 7-6 lead on Miranda Aunspach’s solo home run in the sixth.

Aunspach continued her torrid hitting for W-G. The sophomore was 4-for-4 with two singles, a double and a solo home run while driving in two runs in the loss. She walked in her other plate appearance and is now hitting .431 for the season.

Meagan Bandstra’s hot hitting of late also continued, as the junior was 2-for-5 with a RBI.

Kendra Husmann, Annie Webb, Alyssa Bice and Alison Soelberg also had RBIs for the Hawks.

W-G (7-12, 5-3) will host the Phil Creese Tournament Saturday. The hosts will play Pekin at 10 a.m., with Saydel to meet Pekin at 12 p.m. while Saydel and W-G will square off in the 2 p.m. game.
