The Perry wrestling team will compete on their home mats for the final time this season Jan. 23 when the Bluejays host Carlisle and Coon Rapids-Bayard. The triangular will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The event will also serve as the third annual Wrestle For A Cause event. The first such event raised over $5,000 for the Jake Cavanaugh Foundation, with the money donated to a family in Coon Rapids. Last winter the Jays raised $4,000 for Make-A-Wish Iowa.
This year the event will again raise money for the Jake Cavanaugh Foundation, with the recipients the Jacobson family, who are involved with Perry wrestling.
Leonard Jacobson is a junior wrestler for the Jays. His family has been recently affected by cancer, with three members fighting the battle.
Lisa Jacobson, Leonard’s grandmother, was diagnosed in July with cancer of the uterus. Emma Jacobson, great-granddaughter of Lisa, received a diagnosis of Leukemia in October. In addition, Roger, Leonard’s uncle (and childhood brother) was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September after graduation with the class of 2019 in May. Funds raised in conjunction with the event will be used to pay medical bills and prescription costs associated with Roger’s treatment.
As part of the fundraising effort, the Perry wrestling team is asking local business or individual/family sponsors for each of the 14 weight classes. The minimum donation to sponsor a weight is $50, and those doing so will be listed in the program for the event. Donations of any amount are, of course, welcome.
