Madrid girls cruise past host W-G

WOODWARD — Madrid defeated Woodward-Granger, 45-44, Dec. 15 in Madrid. On Friday the Tigers made sure there would be no such dramatics in the rematch, using a 20-11 run in the third quarter to open a 44-27 lead en route to a 58-44 WCAC victory.

The Tigers (10-9, 6-8) held an 8-5 lead after one frame and possessed a 24-16 halftime edge before creating a victory-assuring gap with the strong third quarter.

The host Hawks (3-16, 0-14) sank only 9-of-23 attempted free throws in the game while the visitors drained 23-of-31, with Shayla Peters accounting for 13-of-16 at the stripe.

Peters had three field goals in each half and hit 7-of-8 from the line before the break and 6-of-8 after the intermission to finish with a game-high 25 points.

Shelbi Raymond and Sarah Eagleton had 14 points apiece for Madrid, with Molly Schaffer adding three points and Kyra Troendle two.

Katelyn Scharlau paced W-G with 15 points, with Alyssa Bice providing 14 points. Seven points from Kayley Dresback, six from Natalie Helbling and two from Kaitlyn Peters capped the Hawk offense.

Peters grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots, with Bice pulling down six boards and making two steals. Scharlau had five caroms and Dresback four assists to help the hosts.

W-G is at Panorama tonight before hosting Earlham Friday and visiting AC/GC Feb. 6.
