Marlow bests Chiodo in 10th annual PGCC Memorial Golf Tournament

Louie and Doris of Perry, who were longtime members of the Perry Golf and Country Club and they played golf well into their 90s, were honored July 9 at the annual Memorial Golf Tournament.

On Sunday, July 9, Jess Marlow won the 10th annual Memorial Golf Tournament Championship in a playoff with runner-up Giannia Chiodo.

Marlow, a former golfer for the Des Moines Area Community College team, won on the first playoff hole, #1, with a par 4, while Chiodo took a bogey 5.

Chiodo held the lead over the first 18 holes with a 4-under score of 68, while Marlow carded a 2-under 70.

Brett Henson was in second place after the first 18 holes with a 69. Over the final nine holes of the day, Marlow drew even with Chiodo by shooting a 3-under 33, while Chiodo settled for a 1-under 35.

Both players fired 27-hole totals of 103 and stood one stroke ahead of former UNI golfer Jack Klingel, 104, who took third-place honors.

In the senior division, co-champions were declared as neither golfer was available for a playoff. Larry Hodges and John Putbrese tied for first place with 1-under par scores of 71.

The honorees for this year’s tournament were Louie and Doris Hensen, longtime members of the Perry Golf and Country Club who played golf into their 90s. The Hensens were very involved with the club and the community.

A total of 90 golfers played in this year’s Memorial Golf Tournament, with 68 battling for the open championship and 22 going for the senior title.
