Jayette pitcher Emma Olejniczak has been named to the Class 4A All-State Second Team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
Olejniczak finished her second consecutive season as second in 4A with 315 strikeouts, the sixth-highest total statewide. Her 16 strikeouts against No. 14 Creston in the state consolation semifinals set state tourney records for most strikeouts in a seven-inning game in 4A and among any level since five classes were begun in 2012. Her 32 total strikeouts was tied with Oskaloosa’s Alexis Groet, with both topping Paige Lowary of DC-G (28 in 2012) for most strikeouts in a 4A tournament.
The junior finished the season 24-11 overall, with nine of her losses coming to teams ranked no lower than 12th — six came to teams that were, at the time, in the top three. She threw 224.2 total innings, allowing 145 hits and 77 runs, of which 47 were earned, creating an ERA of 1.46 while issuing 74 walks and hitting two batters. Opposing batters hit just .158 against the Perry ace. She finishes her junior campaign with 878 career strikeouts.
Olejniczak did her part at the plate as well, hitting .278 (30-of-108) with five doubles, a triple and a home run. She drove in 12 runs and scored 16 times.
Perry, ranked 15th, finished the season sixth at the state tournament with a 25-14 record. The Jayettes are coached by Tina Kenney, who is assisted by Ashley Fricke and Alissa Bahney.
