The 107 members of the PHS Concert Choir and Chorale were joined by Perry Middle School singers and younger participants of Kids Camp for a spirited selection of one-hit wonders in the 2017 Jukebox Variety Show at the Perry Performing Arts Center Saturday night.

This year’s theme was one-hit wonders, huge hits by artists who were more or less never heard of again. Several student soloists performed such one-off wonders as “Lost Boy,” “Bad Day,” “Let Her Go,” “Angel of the Morning” and “The Cup Song.” Student soloists were selected by audition before winter break.

The sixth-to-12th grade boys joined forces for the singular hit, “Pompeii,” and the sixth-to-12th grade girls performed “A Thousand Miles.”

The full PHS Choir performed the Don McLean classics, “Walking in Memphis” and “American Pie,” and the Nota Azul Jass Choir performed “Route 66,” :Someone to Watch over Me” and “Chili con Carne.”

The Kids Camp choir made their second annual appearance in the Jukebox Variety Show. Kids Camp is for students from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, and the young singers joined the high school choirs to deliver “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” a commercial jingle from the 1970s advertising Coca-Cola.

PHS Vocal Music Director Jenn Nelson directed the show. Nelson expressed her gratitude to PHS Instrumental Music Director Brandon Weeks, Auditorium Manager Steve Cook, Perry Community School District Superintendent Lynn Ubben, Principals Dan Marburger and Gary Czerniakowski, Activities Director Tom Lipovac and the parents of the PHS band and choirs.
