PANORA — Lake Panorama National was the host course for a boys Class 2A sectional golf meet Friday, with host Panorama earning the right to play in the May 17 district meet by placing second in the team standings.

The district meet will be played at the Carroll Country Club and hosted by Kuemper Catholic, who edged Panorama, 339-344, for the top honors. With the host school advancing, it allowed for the third place team — in this instance Ogden — to also secure a district slot.

Ogden did so by winning a tiebreaker for lowest fifth score (98-109) after tying with Van Meter at 377. AC/GC was fifth at 401, with AHSTW (413), West Central Valley (490) and Nodaway Valley (634) also in the field.

Individuals advancing and not members of the qualifying teams filled two spots (plus ties), with WCV’s Grant Caltrider (88) and Van Meter’s Parker Fryar and Dylan Sherlock (both 90) moving on.

Kuemper’s Corbin Pietig was the overall medalist with a 78. Ethan Pietig (82), Dawson McDermott (88) and Jack Tiefenthaler (91) also scored for the Knights, with Will Schenkelberg (92) and Cole Collison (95) playing as well.

Panorama junior Kolby Shackelford was the runner-up medalist and sophomore Ryan Klinge third-lowest with rounds of 80 and 81, respectively, with both advancing as part of the team and also as individual qualifiers.

Lucas Leiferman (90) and Dylan Douglass (93) also scored for the Panthers, with Wyatt Appleseth (98) and Trey Cobb (100) playing 18 holes as well.

“On a day where the pin placements were extremely tough, I thought our young men met the challenge and fought through adversity,” Panorama head coach David Van Ahn said. “I am very proud of this team.”

Joining the three LPN qualifiers are Des Moines Christian, Woodward-Granger and Roland-Story, who placed 1-2-3 in Woodward Friday, with Tri-Center and Clarinda advancing from the Shenandoah sectional.

The 2A state meet will be held at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, where Shackelford finished as the state runner-up last season.
