Panorama girls open season with split

Overtime loss to Class 1A two-time state champion Springville follows blowout win over Gilbert.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Panorama’s girls basketball team faced one of best teams in any class Saturday by facing Springville at Coe College. The Orioles, who return all starters, are the two-time defending Class 1A state champion and were the state runner-up three years ago.

Springville raced to an 11-4 lead after one frame, but Panorama responded to close their deficit to 25-22 at the break. Both teams scored 15 third-quarter points to end the period with Springville holding a 40-37 lead, but Panorama was able to force overtime, with regulation ending at 53-all.

The Orioles showed their moxie in the bonus period, blanking the Panthers, 12-0, to claim a 65-53 win.

Panorama had opened their season Nov. 21 with a 54-27 win over Gilbert.

Mikayla Nachazel had 19 points, Rylee Menster 18 and Alyssa Jaeger 11 for Springville. Menster had six assists and three blocks, with Nachzel pulling down 10 rebounds and Jaeger eight, helping the Orioles post a 43-28 edge under the rim.

Morgan Johnk had 21 points for Panorama, with Devyn Kemble adding 16 and Bailey Beckman 12. Three points from Kellie Prince and one from Hope Wilderman closed the Panther scoring.

Johnk had six boards, two steals and two assists, with Kemble and Beckman making three steals apiece. Kemble blocked two shots, and joined Beckman and Prince in pulling down five caroms each.

The Panthers were off to a quick start in their season opener, racing to a 19-7 edge after eight minutes and holding a 34-17 lead at the half. The score stood at 44-27 after three frames, with a 10-0 final frame providing the final score.

The Tigers were just 3-of-20 on 3-point shots and were just 8-of-32 inside the arc to finish 11-of-52 from the floor.

Beckman had 20 points and Kemble 16, with Wilderman tallying seven points, Prince five, Nicole Rolfes four and Johnk two for Panorama.

Kemble had nine rebounds and four steals, Rolfes eight boards and two thefts and Johnk five assists, three steals and six rebounds while Beckman had four assists.

Panorama hosts West Central Valley Friday and then visits IKM-Manning Saturday. Both are girls/boys dates, with Friday’s set starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday’s at 1 p.m.
