Panorama's Bailey Beckman prepares to pass the baton to Morgan Johnk in the 4x400 at the 2017 state meet. The pair were joined by Carson Fisher and Devyn Kemble in competing in the 4x100 Friday at the Drake Relays.

DES MOINES — The Panorama girls track team was represented in two individual and one relay event Friday, with a fifth-place effort highlighting the Panther efforts.

Junior Lydia Knapp qualified for the finals of the discus with a spin of 126 feet, 7 inches on her third and final throw in her preliminary heat. That distance stood up well, and earned Knapp fifth place overall after the top nine were given three additional attempts.

Tipton junior Jamie Kofron won with a throw of 143 feet, with Wapsie Valley senior MacKenzie Goeller (135’9) second, Davenport Central senior Lea Grady (135’6) third and Lewis Central sophomore Lauren Payne (130’8) fourth. Only Kofron competes in Class 2A, a hopeful sign for Knapp as the state meet nears.

Fellow Panther junior Morgan Johnk finished 14th in the 100 hurdles in 15.71 seconds. Waukee’s Sydney Winger won in 14.31, with a clocking of 15.66 the slowest in the finals. Johnk — who was fifth at the state meet last year — had the second-fastest time of any Class 2A runner.

Also in action was the 4×100 unit of Carson Fisher, Bailey Beckman, Devyn Kemble and Johk. The foursome finished 56th of the 80 teams competing with a clocking of 52.3 seconds. Kassidy Bremer and Hope Arganbright were the alternates for the team.

Dubuque Wahlert will be the top seed in today’s finals after finishing in 49.1. Waukee’s 49.78 secured the eighth and final qualifying spot.

Panorama returns to action Tuesday when they compete in the WCAC meet in Ogden.
