Panorama girls win conference cross country crown

PANORA — The Par 3 Golf Course served as host site for Thursday’s WCAC cross country meet, with the Panorama girls and Madrid boys winning league titles.

Panorama, fifth in 2A, won the girls side with 50 points. Van Meter (1A No. 5) was second at 72, with Des Moines Christian (2A No. 11) third at 76 while AC/GC (1A No. 7) finished fourth with 79 points. Class 1A No. 13 Earlham was fifth (93), and Pleasantville sixth (187), with Madrid (196), West Central Valley (233), Ogden (236), and Woodward-Granger (263) rounding out the field.

Defending 1A state champ and top-ranked Madrid won the boys race with 41 points, with 2A no. 7 DMC second at 47 while 1A No. 2 Earlham was third with 51 points. AC/GC (1A No. 13) was fourth 109, and Ogden (1A No. 3) fifth at 124, with Interstate-35 (183), Van Meter (215), Woodward Academy (266), Pleasantville (278), W-G (284), and WCV (287) also in action.

Sophomores Clare Kelly of Van Meter and Lily Dixon of Earlham were 1-2, in 20 minutes, 2 seconds and 20:21, in the girls race, with senior Rylee Ross of AC/GC third in 20:29.

Panorama senior Ella Waddle crossed fourth, in 20;35, with a quartet of teammates close behind. Gwen (8th) and Olivia (11th) Steffen finished in 21:47 and 21:56, respectively, with Payton Beckman 12th in 22:06 and Mia Waddle 15th in 22:26. Leah Fett (41st, 24:57) and Avery Bahrenfuss (47th, 25:20) also in action for the Panthers.

Seniors Jason Renze and Clay Pehl of Madrid were 1-2 in the boys competition in 16:28 and 16:29, with DMC junior Carson Houg third in 16:39.

Junior Avery Norman (56th, 20:44), and freshman Ryan McCarthy (76th, 21:35) were the lone boys competing for the Panther varsity.

Earlham won the girls middle school race with 48 points, with DMC winning the boys side with 28 points. Middle school races are two miles in length.

Mary Fett (22nd, 16:00), Maggie McCarthy (31st, 16:39), and Ella Carico (55th, 19:20) ran for the Panther girls and Dylan Donovan (18:38) for the host boys. All four are seventh grade students.
