Wyatt Appleseth’s third-place finish at 145 pounds was the lead result for Panorama’s wrestlers against a tough field of 17 at the Perry Invitational Saturday.
Ranked sixth in 1A at 138 pounds, Appleseth moved up a division and finished 3-1 to lift his season record to 28-2. He suffered an 8-2 loss to 2A No. 6 Cael Meyer (24-5) of West Delaware — who was wrestling at his preferred weight — in the quarterfinals. Appleseth responded with a win by pin and two victories by major decision to secure third place.
Ranked second in 2A, West Delaware won the team title going away with 271 points. Sergeant Bluff-Luton, rated eighth in 2A, was second at 196.5 while 1A No. 10 Logan-Magnolia was third at 161 with Dowling Catholic (148.5) and Van Meter/Earlham (135.5) completing the top five.
Carlisle (132.5), Woodward-Granger (121), Carroll (112.5), Webster City (98) and Perry (96.5) were the next five, with Eagle Grove (79), Panorama (74), Spencer (63.5), Des Moines North/Hoover (40.5), South Hamilton (30.5), West Marshall (27) and Saydel (18) filling spots 11-17.
Garret Fox (23-10) dropped two matches but recorded three pinfalls along the way to place fourth at 170, with Logan Christe (113) and Noah Kirtley (23-10) both 2-3 in placing sixth at their respective weight classes. Christe won by fall and in sudden victory I, with Kirtley scoring a pin and a decision.
Emry Colby lifted his tally to 20-7 with a 3-1 afternoon that placed the 160-pounder seventh. His wins came by a pair of falls which surrounded a sudden victory I triumph.
Also placing was heavyweight Hunter Holmes (21-13), who was eighth with a 2-3 mark and two pins.
Ryan Fees was 1-3 at 132 with a pin while Jacob Holwegner (138) and James Hein (195) were unable to find a route to victory in their two matches.
The Panthers left the 106, 120, 126, 182 and 220-pound divisions uncontested.
Panorama returns to action Thursday when they will be joined by Southeast Warren and Van Meter/Earlham for a quadrangular in Truro hosted by Interstate-35.
