Panorama holds off Southeast Valley in playoff opener

GRANGER — Panorama grabbed the lead in their first at-bat in Saturday’s Class 2A District 14 First Round game with Southeast Valley, eventually holding on for a 4-3 win to advance to Tuesday’s semifinal against host Van Meter.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

The Panthers held a 3-1 lead after the first inning, with  run in the third pushing Panorama’s advantage to 4-1. Single tallies in the fourth frame and again in the sixth bringing SE Valley to within 4-3, but the Jaguars could come no closer in suffering the loss.

Panorama (7-15) will play host Van Meter (18-6) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in one semifinal, with Woodward-Granger (19-9) to face Ogden (22-5) in the 5 p.m. semifinal. The winners will meet at 7 p.m. in Van Meter Saturday in the D14 Finals. The Substate 7 Final will be played in Marshalltown July 17 at 7 p.m.

Xavier Nichols and Nolan Johnson had a double and a RBI apiece for SE Valley (13-11) in the loss.

Johnson threw seven innings for the Jaguars, allowing four runs (all unearned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Luke South collected the win for Panorama. He yielded three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks while recording eight strikeouts.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Tanner Godfrey had two singles and a RBI for Panorama, with South, Levi Richey, Steve Soreide, Dominic Walker and Koltin Sloss adding singles. Walker had two RBIs and Sloss one. Godfrey scored twice, with Richey and Soreide also crossing the plate.

Saturday’s win the was the fourth consecutive triumph for Panorama, as the Panthers had topped Glidden-Ralston, 3-2, in eight innings in Guthrie Center Thursday.

Tied at 2-all, Panorama scored in the top of the eighth to take a 3-2 lead, with Jacob Iseminger striking out one in three quick outs of relief to earn the save.

Hunter Holmes was the winner, having allowed two runs on two walks and five hits over seven innings. He finished with four strikeouts.

Soreide, Godfrey, Sloss and Preston Walker each hit singles, with South belting a triple. Iseminger, Sloss and Soreide tallied RBIs, with Richey, Soreide and Godfrey each scoring once.
