Panorama sending seven to districts, team to dual regionals

OGDEN — Panorama, ranked 12th in the Class 1A dual team standings, upset No. 6 Interstate-35, 217.5-210.5, Saturday at the Ogden Sectional. The Panthers were powered by three champions and four runner-up placings.

Colfax-Mingo was third with 180 points, with Martensdale-St. Marys (165) fourth, AC/GC (96) fifth, Ogden (96.5) sixth, CR-B/G-R (69) seventh, and South Hamilton (65.5) eighth.

Panorama will battle No. 50 Corydon Wayne Tuesday in a dual team regional semifinal in Truro, with host I-35 facing unranked SE Warren/M-D/LC. The winning team will compete Feb. 14 in the Class 1A Dual Team State Tournament.

Advancing to Saturday’s district meet in Harlan for Panorama were division champions Danny Nordquist (126 pounds), Gunnar Grunsted (170) and Dalton Holmes (195), with second-place finishers Wyatt Appleseth (132), Noah Kirtley (138), Emry Colby (145) and Trevor Carey (182) also keeping their hopes of qualifying to the state tourney alive.

Nordquist (37-7) pinned I-35’s Brody Nelson in 4 minutes, 36 seconds before nailing C-M’s Cyden Fitch in 3:47 to stand atop the podium.

Sixth-ranked Grunsted (39-3) pinned Garrett Bales (OGD) in 1:50 and Steven Linn (M-SM) in 1:48 to seize his crown while Holmes (35-5) nailed Nick Barnes (C-M) in 3:30 before putting the shoulders of No. 8 Blake Haub (OGD) to the mat in 1:45.

Appleseth (38-8), now ranked 10th, claimed an 11-2 major decision over Zachary Fees (AG/GC) before losing an 11-3 major decision to Joshua Tibbits (M-SM). He won by rule (prior victory over Fees) to finish second.

Kirtley (39-12) won a technical fall of 17-2, in 5:42, over M-SM’s Vincent Giraldi and then pinned Gabe Rolwey of AC/GC in 1:53. He lost a 9-7 decision to I-35’s Zac Willey, but had a wrestle-back with Lane Swenson of South Hamilton, which he won by fall, in 4:51, to advance.

Colby (23-20) nailed C-M’s Nathan Evans in 3:13 but had to forfeit because of injury to Ethan Elliot (I-35). He advanced by rule (prior win over Evans).

Carey (38-7) also advanced by rule. He opened with a pin of Ben Kingery (AC/GC) in 3:03 and then nailed Mason Woosley (I-35) in 2:57 before losing by fall to undefeated and top-ranked Logan Schumacher (M-SM) in 2:50. His prior win over Woosley allowed Carey to move on.

Garret Fox (22-17 at 160) and Brady Howard (25-19 at 220) were both third for the Panthers, with Logan Christe (24-22 at 106), Kaleb Stogdill (35-15 at 152), and Dan Jensen (27-16 at 285) all finishing fourth in their weight bracket.

Wyatt Clark (9-26) also competed for Panorama Saturday, finishing sixth at 120 pounds.

Saturday’s district meet in Guthrie Center will start at 12 p.m. Winners and second-place finishers in each four-man bracket will advance to the state tournament.
