PANORA — A strong second half effort lifted the Panorama girls to a 5-2 win over visiting Underwood in non-conference soccer Friday, but a controversial goal in overtime resulted in a 2-1 loss for the host boys.

The first match had the two girls squads enter the intermission with two goals apiece. The Panther defense stiffened in the second half, and the offense found the nylon three times to pull out the victory.

Panorama improved to 9-2 with the win, with Underwood falling to 4-6. Paige Cmelik and Audrey Cmelik each scored twice for the hosts, with Nicole Rolfes adding a goal. Jaelyn Waddle and Kennedy Kuta had assists for the Panthers.

The Panther boys trailed, 1-0, in the first half when senior Blaine Barber knotted the score in the 25th minute. Freshman Trent Hambleton fired a strong in-bounds pass, which Barber turned into a breakaway, eventually beating the keeper to pull the Panthers even with the Eagles.

The score remained unchanged through regulation, with the Eagles scoring late in overtime on a ball that was ruled to have crossed the goal line. There was a brief discussion among the officials, with the goal allowed to stand.

Panorama fell to 2-7 with the loss, with Underwood lifted to 4-6.

Panorama visits Des Moines Christian Monday before hosting West Central Valley Tuesday. Both dates will begin with a girls match at 5 p.m. with the boys contest to start at 7 p.m.
