Panorama to face North Union in state quarterfinals Wednesday

DES MOINES — Third-ranked Panorama (23-1) has earned the second seed in the Class 2A Girls State Basketball Tournament and will play 10th-ranked (and seven-seed) North Union (21-2) at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Arena.

North Union advanced by upsetting fourth-ranked and defending state champion Western Christian, 50-48. They opened the playoffs with wins over Emmetsburg (52-17) and Okoboji (63-45).

Panorama has reeled off 22 consecutive wins after on overtime loss to two-time defending 1A state champ Springville, who is back in the tourney this year. The Panthers beat Van Meter (51-31), Martensdale-St. Marys (56-37) and No. 15 Des Moines Christian (36-33) to reach the tourney.

Cascade (22-3) and Dike-New Hartford (23-2) will meet in the 10 a.m. game Wednesday in a contest pitting teams ranked sixth and ninth, respectively, with the Wednesday winners to meet March 2 at 11:45 a.m. The title game will be played March 3 at 5 p.m.

Treynor (22-1), ranked second, faces No. 11 West Sioux (21-3) Tuesday, with Iowa City Regina (21-4), ranked seventh, facing No. 8 Grundy Center (22-1) in the other game at the top half of the bracket.

North Linn, ranked atop the 2A standings the entire season, was eliminated by Dike-New Hartford (63-54) in a Substate Final.
