Panorama wrestlers compete at AC/GC Saturday

GUTHRIE CENTER — Six of the 10 Panorama grapplers hitting the mats at the 18-team Charger Invitational Saturday finished with spots on the podium in their weight class, helping the Panthers score 101 points despite leaving four divisions open.

Class 2A No. 8 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows won the event with 236.5 points, with Van Meter/Earlham second at 212 Class 1A Underwood, rated fourth, was third overall at 164.5 and Woodward-Granger fourth at 141.5 with Panorama eighth at 101.

Wyatt Appleseth (34-3) led the way, as the eighth-ranked (1A) sophomore placed second at 145 pounds. He opened with two pins and decision before drawing fourth-rated junior Blake Thomsen (47-3) of Underwood, who win a 19-9 major decision.

Noah Kirtley (28-13) was fifth at 152 pounds with a 3-2 mark that featured wins by major decision, technical fall and pin, with heavyweight Hunter Holmes (23-18) 2-2 with two pins in placing fifth. Also fifth was 113-pounder Logan Christe (22-18), who was 2-2 with one win by injury default and one by decision.

Emry Colby (24-11) had a win by tech fall and one by decision in finishing 2-3 and in sixth place at 160 pounds, with Garret Fox (29-12) placing seventh at 182. Fox lost his opening bout, then scored four consecutive pins to earn his spot in the placings.

Ryan Fees (18-22), Jacob Holwegner (7-14) and James Hein (17-19) were in action at 132, 138 and 195, respectively, with each finishing 1-2, while Cooper Anderson (14-7) had a 1-3 invite at 182.

The Panthers did not have entries at 106, 120, 126 or 220 pounds.

Panorama will return to Guthrie Center Saturday for the 1A Section 3 Tournament, with the winner and runner-up from each weight class advancing to the district tourney. In addition to the hosts, AHSTW, Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton, Nodaway Valley, Ogden and West Central Valley will also be in action at the sectional.
