Panorama freshman Ella Waddle leads the pack in the 3000 run at the Class 2A State Track Meet Thursday. Waddle finished fifth.

DES MOINES — Freshman Ella Waddle’s fifth-place effort in the 3000 highlighted a heavy slate of action for the Panorama girls track team at the state meet Thursday.

Waddle competed in the second event of the afternoon session and, after leading for a nearly two laps, managed to stay in touch with the leaders until AC/GC’s Kate Crawford began to take control of the race after 1,000 meters.

With Mid-Prairie sisters and standout athletes Marie and Anna Hostetler expected to dominate, Crawford shocked the crowd by opening what looked like a comfortable lead, only to have Marie Hostetler run her down over the last 100 meters to snatch the win, in 10 minutes, 25.78 seconds, from Crawford, who crossed second in 10:26.89. Anna Hostetler was third and Pocahontas Area’s Jill Vonnahme fourth, with Waddle fifth in 10:55.73, her second-fastest time.

Panther senior Devyn Kemble sped to seventh place in the 400 in 59.74. Jordyn Pester of MVAO-COU won the event in 56.63.

Panorama had two girls competing in the long jump. Bailey Beckman placed 12th overall with a best leap of 16 feet, 1/4 inch, with Kassidy Bremer 14th at 15’8-3/4. Sheldon’s Ashlyn Albrecht won the title at 17’10-1/2.

The 4×800 unit of Gwen Steffen, Brianna Hoffman, Olivia Steffen and Lydia Lindstrom shaved over 13 seconds off their qualifying time to finish 11th in 10:02.36, one step behind WCAC rival W-G, who was 10th in 10:05.95. Monticello claimed the championship in 9:35.18.

Carson Fisher competed in the preliminaries of the 100 dash, finishing in 13.55 seconds. Though it did not qualify for the finals, her clocking did improve Fisher’s standing from 24th to 22nd.

The shuttle hurdle relay of Maggie Woodvine, Maddie Knapp, Shey Storesund, and Morgan Johnk finished in 1:08.48 to earn the fourth-seed in the finals, set for 9 a.m. Saturday.

Spencer Hunt was scheduled to run in the 100 and 200 dash preliminary heats as well as the 400 timed finals but did not appear in any event. No word was received regarding Hunt’s three scratches.
