Panthers ground host Cardinals for pair of WCAC wins

EARLHAM — The Panorama girls cagers improved to 10-1 in WCAC basketball while the Panther boys moved to 9-3 in league play after both squads topped host Earlham Friday.

Panorama (14-2 overall) was a 63-39 winner over Earlham (7-9, 3-8) in the girls game, with the Panthers (11-5 overall) a 65-56 victor over the Cardinals (5-11, 3-10) in the boys contest.

Leads of 19-11 and of 36-24 after each of the first two quarters helped carry the Panorama boys to victory.

The biggest surprise of the evening came when Panther senior guard Malachi Peasley missed a free throw, snapping his streak of consecutive made shots from the line at 62. Peasley is second in 2A in accuracy at the stripe (minimum 50 attempts) at 86.9 percent. His 93 makes are second most in 2A despite his 107 attempts only the fifth most.

Peasley finished 13-of-16 at the line as part of his 20 points. He also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Zach Rizzuti had 18 points and Dominic Walker and Michael Allen eight apiece. Drew Taylor scored seven points, Kolby Shackelford two and Evan Taylor two. Drew Taylor pulled down seven caroms and Allen six.

Statistical information from Earlham was not available.

The Panorama girls wasted little time in taking control of their game, racing to a 19-5 lead after eight minutes of play and holding a 32-17 edge at the half. The guests outscored their hosts, 17-8, in the third frame to enter the fourth period with a 49-25 advantage.

The Panthers dominated the rebounding, pulling down 37 caroms. Angel Poldberg had nine boards, Anna Holloway eight and Payton Beckman six, with Beckman adding five steals and Poldberg three.

Beckman led all scorers with 19 points, with Poldberg scoring 14 and Laci Rishel 11. Holloway had nine points, Shey Storesund five, Ella Waddle three and Gabby Welberg two. Beckman hit two 3-pointers and Storesund and Waddle one each.

Rachel Smith had 12 points and Jenna Conry 10 for Earlham, with Alli Boyle providing eight points, Megan Kingery four, Kara Hohertz three and Abby Presler two. Smith had two treys and Presler one.

Panorama will play at home three times if four days next week. They host Ogden Tuesday, Des Moines Christian Thursday and Interstate-35 Friday.
