PANORA — When the West Central Valley and Panorama girls soccer teams met for the first time this season the issue was decided on penalty kicks, as an overtime period failed to determine a victor.

The Panthers prevailed, 4-3, to claim the title at the Wildcats own tourney April 28. WCV, seeking revenge, scored three times in Tuesday’s match at Panora, but this time the Panorama offense was too much, and the hosts emerged as 7-3 victors.

“This was a hard-fought game against a rival,” Panorama head coach Curt Thornberry said. “The team bounced back in strong form after the disappointing loss (Monday).”

Panorama had rallied from a 2-0 hole to tie No. 12. Des Moines Christian Monday, only to see the Lions slip away with a 3-2 win. No ill effects were evident Tuesday, with Thornberry pleased with his defense despite yielding three goals.

“Our defensive line controlled the back,” he said. “We had good play from our goalies, with Ashley Clark making five saves and Lauren Soll two saves.”

Audrey Cmelik had another hat trick, with her three goals pushing the freshman to 22 scores for the season. She also provided an assist, her ninth.

Ella Waddle had two goals and two assists, rising to 11 and nine, respectively, while Paige Cmelik scored as well, her 20th. Nicole Rolfes also stretched the onion bag, her fourth score of the year.

WCV, which shares their girls program with AC/GC and Nodaway Valley, fell to 4-7 with the loss while Panorama improved to 10-3 in their first varsity season.

Panorama will play at Collins-Maxwell Friday in a girls/boys twinbill, with the girls match to begin at 5 p.m.
