The Perry Area Winter Swim team (PAWS) hosted the Greater Iowa Swim League state meet Saturday at the McCreary Community Building.

A total of 12 teams were in action, with 142 girls swimming in the morning session while 102 boys swam in the afternoon events.

Several COVID precautions were taken, with no spectators allowed on the pool deck. PerryIAswimming live streamed the meet on YouTube, with the announcer and live feed broadcast on TV’s and computers throughout the MCB. It was also, of course, available online, with a replay available for viewing on the YouTube channel listed above.

Fans, coaches, and meet workers all wore masks in the lobby, with swimmers masked until they stepped onto the starting blocks. The gym and two studio spaces were utilized for the crowd, swimmers, and workers, with chairs spaced at a social distance of six feet.

Spencer (1,231 points) and Newton (554) were 1-2 in the girls competition, with PAWS fifth of 12 at 334. Spencer (804) also won the boys side, with SouthEast (441) second and PAWS (305) fourth of 12 squads. Spencer claimed the combined team crown with 2,035 points. Carroll was second overall at 832, with PAWS sixth, at 639, among the dozen competitors.

PAWS recorded numerous time drops and personal bests, with PHS junior Jaylene Karolus, in particular, shining for the hosts. She was one of nine girls to record a perfect 60 points, finishing first in her three races, during which she set new state meet records in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly.

Karolus paired with Sophia McDevitt, Zoe Hibbert, and Addison Huntington in winning the 15-18 200 medley relay, with Karolus, McDevitt, Hibbert and Emily Dowd state titleists in the 200 free relay.

The PAWS boys had several blue ribbon finishes as well, starting with Isaac Winey winning the 11-12 50 backstroke. Garrett Winey won the 13-14 100 Individual Medley, Riese Archer the 15-18 50 backstroke and Andrew Dowd the 15-18 100 butterfly. Archer, Dowd, Sam Ridnour, and Garrett Winey won the 15-18 200 medley relay, with the same foursome also winning the 15-18 200 free relay.

PAWS was coached by Dana Stein, with Ainsley Marburger and Riese Archer assisting. Nikki Deardorff served as GISL parent representative.
