Ivan Garcia boots a successful PAT kick out of the hold of Ryan Rathje. J.R. McCord's (66) block helped make sure the ball split the uprights.

LAST YEAR — Perry prevailed, 34-21, in a battle that was all about the two quarterbacks, who, combined, accounted for over 80 percent of the total yards in the game.
Matt Cox caught four passes for 100 yards and one touchdown, with Grant Rampton snaring four balls for 71 yards and a score. Both return for the Comets.
Eli Saemisch ran seven times for 19 yards, with Nic Fellom gaining 18 yards on three receptions and Marcus Meri 54 yards on two completions. Saemisch had 10.5 tackles, Joe Olvera 6.5 and Alonzo Zarate and Solomon Pierce 5.5 stops apiece. Pierce had two tackles for a loss and a sack, with Jacob Thompson picking off a pass to help spark the Perry defense.

ABOUT THE COMETS — North Polk was nipped, 31-29, at Bondurant-Farrar in their season opener. Max Karpinske has helped keep the team quarterback-oriented, as he was 13-of-28 for 186 yards and a TD through the air while being intercepted three times. He rushed for 86 yards and two scores on 16 carries, with Mason Russell (6-32) and Michael Ballard (9-31) also taking hand offs.
Cox caught seven passes for 93 yards and Rampton three for 44, with Adam Moxley snaring a 10-yard pass and a 30-yard TD strike. Carter Hartwig (1-9) had the remaining reception.
Defensive statistics were not provided.

ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — Perry scored twice in the final minute of the third quarter but it was not enough to overcome visiting ADM as the Jays fell, 14-13, in week one.
Ryan Rathje hit on 19-of-29 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown, but was intercepted twice and sacked seven times for a loss of 36 yards.
Taviar Lucas caught nine passes for 61 yards and a TD, with Meri pulling in four passes for 38 yards and Saemisch three for 13 yards. Adan Medina (1-8), Reece Dunlap (1-5) and Thompson (1-4) also caught Rathje aerials.
Saemisch had 32 yards on 11 runs, but with sack yardage counted against rush yards, Perry finished with a negative nine yards on the ground.
Saemisch had eight tackles, Mark Campos 6.5 and Pierce six, with Medina, Ivan Garcia and Donald Chavez making 5.5 stops apiece. Saemisch and Pierce had three tackles for loss apiece, with Medina and Campos also having TFL’s. Medina returned a fumble 35 yards for a TD and Ivan Garcia returned an interception 32 yards.
