MONROE, Iowa — Host PCM claimed both ends of a HOIAC twinbill over Perry Tuesday, with the Mustang girls winning, 40-34, before recording a 70-37 victory in the boys contest.

Perry saw their record fall to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in league play after falling in the boys game, with PCM raising their mark to 3-5 and 2-2.

As has been the case all season it was the early moments that spelled disaster for the Bluejays. PCM opened an 18-6 lead eight minutes into Tuesday’s game, with a strong 23-4 second frame creating a 41-10 halftime gulf far too great to overcome.

Despite the margin on the scoreboard, Perry coach David Morris said he found reasons for optimism.

“I have seen vast improvement over the last two weeks,” Morris remarked. “It may not be seen by all, but it is there. We are playing at a higher speed and defending at a different level and working together. It is a team process.”

Zander Mahler led the Bluejays with 14 points. Drake Levan had eight points, Kaelen Davis five, Owen Myers and Matthew Booker four apiece and Kaleb Lyddon two.

Mahler recorded five rebounds and three steals, with Booker pulling down six boards whiel Davis came away with four thefts.

Perry (3-4, 0-4) faced a 25-13 halftime deficit in the girls game, but the Jayettes rallied with a strong third quarter to tie the game at 27-all entering the final frame.

PCM (3-6, 1-1) then used a 13-7 edge on the scoreboard over the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

Perry led, 32-30, with four minutes remaining, with PCM moving in front, 33-32, a minute later and then slowing pulling out the six-point win.

Lydia Olejniczak had 16 points and nine rebounds for Perry, with Jayna Kenney adding 10 points and five rebounds. Kathryn West added six points, with Callie Steva scoring two.

Addison Steenhoek led the home team with 21 points.

Perry hosts Greene County Friday for a ‘Mega Night.’ The junior varsity girls will tip-off at 4:30 in the PHS gym, with the JV boys outing beginning at 5:45 in the middle school gym. The varsity girls will start at 6 p.m. with the boys following.

Perry will visit ADM for a non-conference set Monday, with the pre-holiday portion of the season ending Tuesday when Saydel visits.
