The Perry City Council is expected to approve tonight an in-town route for a connector between the High Trestle Trail and the Raccoon River Valley Trail, bringing one step nearer to completion the nearly decade-long effort to connect to two popular trails in Perry.

According to the resolution set to come before the council at its Monday night meeting, the city has conducted discussions with “city staff, engineers, planners, community members and biking community members” in choosing the connector’s route.

The experts have judged “the most efficient, safest and cost-effective” option is to bring the High Trestle Trail southward from Wiese Park along Eighth Street and then westward on Willis Avenue to Third Street. The trail will then jog one block southward to Otley Avenue and one block westward to Second Street, where it will join the RRVT.

The proposed route is the result of “extensive meetings, mapping, budgeting and planning,” according to the resolution.

The Perry City Council meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the second floor conference room of the Towncraft building at 1122 Willis Ave. The meetings are open to the public.
