Perry finishes 2-2 at own tourney Thursday

The Perry volleyball team donned pink uniforms as part of a Dig For a Cure cancer awareness event Thursday. The annual Jayette Tournament saw teams from Ballard, Des Moines Hoover, Roland-Story and Saydel visit the PHS gym, with the hosts finishing 2-2.

Roland-Story (22-5) finished 4-0 to win the tourney, with Perry opening play by topping Saydel, 21-4 and 21-9, before besting DM Hoover 21-17 and 21-19. The hosts then fell, 21-9 and 21-11, to Ballard, with R-S stopping Perry by scores of 21-6 and 21-7.

Perry is now 11-14 overall. They will play Williamsburg, Fort Dodge, Glenwood and Stanton Saturday at the Indianola Tourney. The next Jayette win, their 12th, would match their most victories in a season since 2015. Perry was 7-32 last year.

Kacy Nevitt led Perry Thursday with 14 combined kills, with Jasmine Shriver adding seven kills, Jayna Kenney four, Ashley Cerna two and Taylor Atwell and Lanie Fish one each. Atwell had 25 assists, with Fish, Kenney and Magley Orellana providing one apiece.

Libero player Orellana came away with 46 digs, with Nevitt making 23 and Atwell 15. Shriver had 15 digs as well, with Kenney (7), Cerna (6), Mary Ann Riesberg (5), Fish (4), Peyton Tunink (2) and Bella Nath (1) also aiding the defense. Kenney and Shriver had three blocks apiece, with Cerna, Nash and Nevitt each blocking two attempted kills while Fish had one block.

Perry served 89 percent, connecting on 98-of-110 serves while recording 12 total aces.

Orellana was 24-24-2, Kenney 15-18-5, Atwell 17-18-1, Shriver 17-19-1, Riesberg 15-16-2 and Nevitt 9-11-1 with Fish 2-of-3.
