MADRID — Perry began their cross country season in fine form Thursday with the Jayettes winning the girls team crown while the Bluejays finished third overall at the Madrid Invitational.

Freshman Jaylene Karolus led the Perry girls by finishing first in a 49-runner race in 22 minutes, 1 second. Sophomore Molly Lutmer was sixth in 23:41 and junior Kailey Crawford seventh in 24:02 while sophomores Kennedy Tunink and Cris Gomez placed eighth and 10th, respectively, in 24:22 and 24:56.

That gave Perry a scored of 32, besting Woodward-Granger and Madrid, each of which finished at 57. W-G’s sixth placer was 20th and Madrid’s 24th, giving the former second place in the tiebreaker. Coon Rapids-Bayard (123), Ogden (126), Colo-NESCO (144) and the new Woodward Academy team (188) were also in action.

Also earning varsity spots for Perry were juniors Hannah Peterson and Angela Hernandez, who were 18th and 25th in 25:41 and 28:12. The first seven runners of each team are considered varsity, with the first five places used for the team total.

W-G senior Josie Noland was second overall in 23:01, with Madrid sophomore Alex Jacobs third in 23:11.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Class 1A top-ranked Madrid scored a near-perfect 17 points to win the boys race. Ogden (62) was second and Perry (92) third, with the Woodward Academy (102), W-G (107) and Colo-NESCO (158) also running.

Madrid swept the top three individual spots, with top-rated Sean McDermott crossing in 16:50 while Jason Renze finished in 17:24 and Rory McDermott in 17:29.

Three seniors led the way for Perry, as Mario Cruz (18:57), Eduardo Sanchez (19:01) and Eli Noble (19:37) were 12-13-16 for the Bluejays. Junior Hayden McFarland was 22nd in 20:04 and senior Ethan Miller 29th in 21:19.

Junior Tomas Lopez (30th, 21:30) and freshman Tanner Burgin (34th, 21:46) also posted varsity efforts for head coach Ryan Marzen’s squad.

Perry returns to action Tuesday with a visit to the Winterset Invite, with a trip to Spring Lake State Park for the Greene County Invite scheduled for Thursday.
