The Perry golf teams pose at the conclusion of the 2018 Witmer-Dunphy Coed Invite. Perry hosts the annual event Monday.

A long tradition continued Monday at the Perry Golf and County Club as the Bluejay and Jayette teams hosted the Witmer-Dunphy Coed, played in honor of the two long-time Perry coaches.

Gilbert edged West Central Valley, 182-183, to win the boys side, with North Polk shooting 185, Perry 196 and late addition West Hancock a 239. Gilbert’s 180 claimed the girls side, with North Polk at 213, Perry at 214 and West Hancock at 256. WCV did not have four golfers and thus could not create a team score.

In keeping with the format of the meet, a combined team champion was crowned, with Gilbert’s 362 easily topping North Polk’s 398 for top honors. Perry had a combined score of 410 and West Hancock of 495.

Tommy Doyle of Gilbert shot a three-over par 38 to win boys medalist status, with WCV’s Garrett Caltrider the runner-up with a 39. Girls medalist honors were claimed by Britta Snyder, with Gilbert teammate Katie Jenkins the runner-up after the Tiger duo produced cards of 39 and 41, respectively.

Connor Nielsen led Perry with a 43, with Luke Rathje shooting a 45. Emilio Gonzalez had a 52 and Gabe Ridnour a 56. The team was playing without Tanner Duffy.

“It was an excellent day for some golf and our scores showed it,” Perry boys head coach John Fulton said. “Connor had his best round of the year shooting eight-over, and that was with a double-bogey mixed in. Luke continues to be consistent and Gabe and Emilio have definitely been improving.”

“We will finally get a good week of practice in this week before our next meet on Friday (at Ballard),” he added. “We will finally have a chance to work on some things!”

Alyssa Kruger had the low round for the Perry girls with a 42. Molly Lutmer turned in a 48, Delaney Eiteman a 57 and Skylar Cunningham a 67. Hannah Roberts played as well, but was disqualified on a scorecard technicality.

The Perry girls will play 18-holes at the Woodward-Granger Invite Thursday, then host Ballard Friday.
