The theme for the first of two performances Tuesday by the Perry Pulse Dancers was "Coming to America."

The Perry Pulse dancers performed at halftime of both the girls and boys basketball games Tuesday, showcasing routines the group will perform at the state competition.

During the girls game the squad donned all-black apparel, with American flag patches sewn onto the upper right sleeves of every dancer. Each girl then had from one to three flag patches sewn onto her left arm, representing her individual family heritage.

The group performed with red-white-and-blue hoops along with hoops in the colors on many of the other nations represented on their outfits. They danced to Neil Diamond’s 1981 hit single “America” which was originally featured on the soundtrack of his movie “The Jazz Singer” that was released in 1980.

At the end the hoops formed the image of the American flag, with a voice-over declaring that though their families and some of the girls themselves were from different countries they were all now Americans, and thus one, as “Perry is one.”

The routine received a warm response from both the home and visiting crowds.

The dancers returned at the intermission of the boys contest and featured their pom routine to “Celebrate.”
