DES MOINES, Iowa — Cole Nelson came up on the short end of a pair of matches Thursday in the first day of the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament, brining to an end an outstanding career.

The Perry senior was competing on the biggest stage in prep wrestling for the third time in his career. He had reached the state tourney at 106 pounds as a freshman and was sixth at 113 pounds as a sophomore.

Wrestling at 138 pounds, Nelson (35-6) opened against Forest City junior Kellen Moore (33-2), who is ranked fifth. The match went to Sudden Victory 1 before it was decided, with Moore claiming a 6-2 win.

That set up a consolation match against Jackson Jaspers (42-9, So.) of Mt. Vernon, with Nelson finishing on the wrong side of a 6-2 decision.

The Bluejay standout finishes his career with a strong 145-37 record.
