Perry Middle School sixth graders hosted a "Trip around the World" culture fair Wednesday, presenting their research on some of the 195 countries in the world today, which includes the 193 countries that are member states of the United Nations and two countries that are non-member observer states, the Holy See and the state of Palestine.

The 150 sixth graders in the Perry Middle School hosted a “Trip around the World” culture fair Wednesday morning, with seven classrooms serving as virtual continents for local explorers to tour.

Carla Wood, Perry Middle School social studies teacher, said the culture fair was the capstone activity of the students’ course in social geography.

Each student was assigned a country to research and then present at the fair in the form of a poster. The students worked in teams of two.

As part of the lesson, students also assembled a “culture bags,” Wood said, in which they put five things symblizing their own cultural heritage.

A large number of tourists turned out for the culture fair, including a number of adults from the community. Lasting only 45 minutes, the whirlwind tour involved spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of culture.

Wood said the lesson in culture was formerly part of the sevent grade curriculum, but recent changes have introduced the information to sixth graders.

The world’s great diversity of cultures was united under a symbol of universal value at the “Trip around the World” culture fair Wednesday.
