ROLAND — The Perry softball team used a combined 28 hits to score 17 total runs in claiming a pair of victories in the Roland-Story Tournament Saturday.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

Perry began the day with an 11-7 win over Gilbert before recording a 6-4 victory against Nevada to improve to 8-12 overall. Gilbert fell to 2-9 and Nevada to 5-9 with the losses.

Perry was the visitor against Gilbert and was playing the Tigers for the second time in less than a week, having notched a 12-2 win Tuesday at the PAC.

The Jayettes were off quickly, grabbing a 3-0 lead that disappeared when the Tigers countered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Each team scored once in the second, with a five-run Perry third opening a 9-4 gap.

Gilbert closed to within 9-7 with three runs in the fourth, but two Perry tallies in the fifth capped the scoring, as the game ended via time limit after Gilbert could not, at the least, tie the game in their at-bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Alyssa Kruger earned the pitching win, hitting one batter and walking two while allowing eight hits. She struck out four, with five Perry errors making only two of the seven runs scored off the senior earned.

Gabby West drove in two runs with three singles and a double, with Jo Diw adding two singles, a double, a stolen base and four runs while collecting two RBIs. Perry also received three hits, two RBIs and a steal from Sid Vancil, with Kruger adding two hits, two RBIs and a steal. Jayna Kenney, T.J. Sheehy, and Grace Stewart also had hits, with Kenney sending one runner across the plate.

Perry was the home squad against Nevada, answering a first-inning Cubs run with two of their own and then three more in the second for a 5-1 Jayette lead. Nevada tacked on two runs in the third and another in the fifth to shave the margin to 5-4, but Perry scored once in the sixth and then kept Nevada off the board to secure the win.

West jacked a two-run home run in the first and later drove in another run to spark Perry. Vancil had two single, a double, a steal and a RBI, with both Sheehy and Adriana Eastman providing a single and a double.

Kruger had two hits and a RBI, with Diw adding a double and a RBI while Kenney and Peyton Tunink had one hit apiece.

Kenney and Tunink — both eighth-graders — combined for the win and the save in the circle for the Jayettes.

Kenney went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a hit batsman while striking out four. Tunink earned a three-inning save by surrendering just one run on two hits and a walk while whiffing two.

Statistical information from both Gilbert and Nevada was not available.

Perry is on the road for the next week, visiting Winterset Monday, Carroll Wednesday, and Boone Thursday before playing in the Pella Christian Tournament Saturday. They will return home to face Carlisle June 25.
