Perry will send their freshmen and sophomore football teams to Norwalk for a 6 p.m. game today.

NORWALK, IA — The Perry football team has forfeited the remaining three varsity games on their schedule, but in an arrangement with Norwalk — who was to host Perry Friday — the two schools will be in a ‘curtain raiser’ game at 6 p.m. Oct. 6.

The decision to cancel the remainder of the varsity schedule was announced Wednesday morning.

So-called ‘curtain raiser’ games normally kick off at 4:45 p.m. on Friday’s and feature freshmen, with some teams allowed, due to numbers, to play sophomores. Perry is one such team.

Norwalk agreed to host the game in a desire from both schools to afford as much playing time to as many players as possible.

Whelchel said discussions were currently underway with other schools for the possibility of playing future frosh/soph games with season but that upperclassmen would not play.

Perry, who did not have a freshman-only schedule to begin with, was scheduled to host Boone Oct. 14 and Carlisle Oct. 21.

Practices are currently continuing as normal, with juniors and seniors participating. Whelchel said she and head coach Bryce Pierce are eager to give those players as much playing time as possible. The opportunity to play a limited-time scrimmage or some other form of controlled game remain open, Whelchel said, and it was her hope some kind of arrangement could be made with other schools and approved by the state.

The number of quarters each player is allowed to total in a seven-game period is just one of many issues that would require attention.
