Perry wrestlers battle for points at quadrangular

STATE CENTER, Iowa — Perry joined Gilbert and Humboldt for a four-team wrestling meet at West Marshall Thursday.

Gilbert beat Perry, 60-18, with Humboldt scoring a 67-6 win over Perry while West Marshall posted a 51-30 victory to keep the Bluejays winless at the event as a team. Humboldt was a 58-12 winner over Gilbert and a 43-24 victor over West Marshall while the hosts bested Gilbert, 45-34.

Forfeits to Cole Nelson at 138 pounds and to Carlos Sandoval at heavyweight were joined by a pin, in 51 seconds, at 132 pounds by Alex Fickbohm to account for Perry’s only points against Gilbert. The lone Perry points against Humboldt came at 285 when Brayan Garcia was granted a forfeit.

Perry had four pins against West Marshall. Nelson (138) beat his man in 1 minute, 29 seconds, with Tanner Burgin recording a fall at 145 in 3:52. Kain Killmer needed one extra second (3:53) to earn his win by fall at 170, with Alan Gomez pinning his opponent at 285 in 1:37. The other Perry points came with a forfeit to Gavin Kercheval at 120.

Taylor Atwell was turned back in both of her matches at 113, with Perry leaving 113 open against Gilbert while not having an entrant at 160 against any of the three opponents.

In action for the Jays but unable to record a win in three matches were Mercedes Ponce (106), Cristobal Turrado (126), Daniel Cornelio (152), Samuel Hernandez (195) and Robbie Mason (220).

Kercheval (120), Fickbohm (132), Burgin (145) and Killmer (170) all had a pair of setbacks, with Nelson (138) losing once.

Perry will return to action Saturday with a visit to the Aububon Invitational.
