Greene County and Humboldt will visit Perry for a wrestling triangular Jan. 24 that will be much more than simple competition on the mats.
The gathering has been chosen as the second annual “Wrestling For a Cause” evening, with the Bluejay wrestlers selecting Make-A-Wish Iowa as the recipient for all funds raised at the event.
Perry’s first “Cause” night was held last year, with the “Jake Can” foundation benefiting. Over $5,000 was raised, with the money used to aid the family of a Coon Rapids-Bayard youth battling cancer.
“Ultimately, last year blew us away with the money we were able to raise,” Perry head coach Mark Weber said. “That showed the power of the Perry community and the support given to those in need. I don’t know if we can reach that level again, but anything we do will be appreciated, I am sure — Make-A-Wish is a great organization.”
Families, businesses and local community supporters are being asked to sponsor one of the 14 weight classes. Cost is a minimum donation of $50, though no amount will be rejected. Contact the PHS office for further information on sponsorship.
“Danene Stewart did a great job of making this happen last year and had taken the lead in organizing everything again this year,” Weber said. “I am thankful for her willingness and energy in planning this event — it would not happen without her.”
All members of the Junior Jays Wrestling Club will be admitted free, with the Junior Jays to be recognized during the triangular.
A bucket brigade will be held to help raise additional funds, and the Perry Pulse Dancers will perform between the first and second duals. Additional events and activities may be added.
The triangular will begin at 5:30 p.m.
