Perry wrestlers welcome Winterset to begin new season

Perry fell to host Ogden Friday in their second outing of the football season.

Former Raccoon River Conference rival Winterset was the guest of the Perry wrestlers Thursday as both teams kicked off their respective mat seasons.

Winterset was a 55-24 winner over Perry, who is under the guidance of head coach Chris Cardanes.

Perry’s Cole Nelson is ranked eighth in 2A at 120 pounds but stepped all the way up to 138 pounds to collect a win by pin in 3 minutes, 36 seconds.

Tanner Burgin was a 3-0 winner at 145 pounds, with Christian Garrido an 11-8 victor at 152. The Jays also collected points when forfeits were granted to Aidan Carlson at 106 and Alex Gomez at 285.

Taylor Atwell (113), Isaac Ballard 126, Julie Maylum (132), Jose Chavez (160), Kain Killmer (170), Keegan Snyder (182), Pablo Calderon (195) and Kevin Colin (220) were all unable to collect a win in their matches, with Perry leaving the 120-pound match uncontested.

There were numerous junior varsity matches as well, with Jovani Ortiz (120), Julie Maylum (126) and Daniel Cornelio (152) recorded wins for the hosts.

Also in action for the Bluejays were Christian Cresenco, Martha Turrado, Jonathon Chavez, Cristobal Turrado, Kyle Hernandez, Jonathan Barrios-Mendez, Robbie Mason, Erik Escobar and Juan Hernandez.

Perry will join Colfax-Mingo and Woodward-Granger for a triangular at Ogden Tuesday, with a long trip to the Aplington-Parkersburg tournament scheduled for Dec. 11.
