Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson will put his pride — and his hide — on the line Friday, Sept. 8 when he tries his hand at bull riding to raise money for the Raccoon River Valley Trail to High Trestle Trail Connector.

The Let’s Connect fundraising event will be staged at the Dallas County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. Pledges can be made per second of the ride or as a set dollar amount.

On the island of Crete, female acrobats once performed on the backs of bulls, as figured in this bronze from Minoa, dated 1550-1450 BC.

“I’ve got $200 pledged per second so far,” Peterson said Wednesday, so if he holds on for two seconds, $400 will go to the Dallas County Conservation Foundation to support the nine-mile connector trail between Perry and Woodward that links the High Trestle Trail and the Raccoon River Valley Trail.

If Peterson holds on for four seconds, then $800 will be raised. Pledge forms are available at the Perry City Hall, on the Let’s Connect website and for download right here.

Peterson will be testing his mettle against Mudslinger, a black bull with large horns. Will the man known to toss around some bull be himself tossed by the one-ton bull?

“I rode a bronco last year about this time,” Peterson said, “so you could say I’ve had some experience, but I’ve been told bulls are totally different.”
