WOODWARD — The most successful season in the history of Woodward-Granger boys basketball did not happen by accident, and many of the players who made it happen have been recognized for their efforts.

W-G was 22-3 overall and 14-2 in WCAC play. The 22 wins are the most in a season for the Hawks and helped propel the team to their first state tournament appearance in 34 years.

Bryce Achenbach was named All-Substate 6 as well as being an unanimous All-WCAC First Team selection.

Kaya Bowlsby and Keith Braunschweig were both named to the All-WCAC Second Team, with Reese Jamison and Pacey Moats both chosen for Honorable Mention status.

Academic honors were also earned. Achenbach was one of 27 players statewide to be named Academic All-State by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association, with fellow Hawks Jamison and Jack Grell named Academic All-District.

All-WCAC honors are based solely on statistics from conference games only.

Achenbach averaged 17.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest while sinking 10-of-42 (24 percent) of his 3-pointers and 31-of-53 (59 percent) of his free throws. He had 83 assists and 34 steals in league action while committing just 28 turnovers.

Bowlsby averaged 8.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 26-of-38 (68 percent) at the foul line. He tallied 32 assists and 33 steals.

Braunschweig scored 11.8 points per game while pulling down 4.8 caroms per outing. He blocked eight shots, sank 19-of-39 (49 percent) 3-pointers and 43-of-54 (80 percent) free throws.

Moats had an 8.1 ppg clip with 2.8 rebounds per outing. The distributed 55 assists and made 25 steals while sinking 13-of-39 (33.3 percent) of his treys.

Jamison finished with a 6.9 ppg average and a 5.1 rpg rate while recording 33 assists and 22 steals.

Van Meter head coach Jed Alexander was selected as the WCAC Coach of the Year, with W-G head coach Brent Achenbach the Substate 6 Coach of the Year.

Bryce Achenbach is a senior, like all the Hawk players listed. He earned his All-Substate spot by scoring 48 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, making 13 assists and having three steals in three W-G victories.
