When these Bluejays posed for this Nov. 27, 1919 photo, Perry had already played Jefferson 22 times, beginning in 1898. However, it was not until 1928 that the "Cowbell" became the traveling prize the two rivals would annually vie for. Greene County won in Friday's 91st playing of the contest.

ABOUT THE COWBELL — The Perry-Jefferson football series is believed to be the longest-held rivalry in Iowa High School sports history, dating back to a 34-5 win by the Perry YMCA over Jefferson High on October 15, 1898. In 1928 the Perry and Jefferson Rotary Clubs offered a traveling prize, “The Cowbell” to the winning team. The teams will be meeting for the 85th time since the inception of The Cowbell Trophy, with the Rams holding a 54-28 edge. The game was twice ended in a tie; it is believed the game was not played from 1943-45. The past six seasons have seen the prize spend an equal number of years in the trophy cases at each school, with Perry winning in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and Greene County in 2011, 2014 and 2015.

LAST MEETING — Greene County dominated the game, winning 35-0, despite running fewer offensive plays. The Rams passed for 200 yards and ran for 187 more, although only 85 receiving and 34 rushing yards return. Nick Schroeder had four receptions for 85 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown. Perry had only 58 passing yards and just 43 rushing yards in the loss.

ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — Perry has yet to record 1,000 yards of offense. The team has thrown for 432 yards and rushed for 539 yards, scoring three times through the air and five times on the ground. The Bluejays have been outscored, 69-227, this season.

Adan Medina began the year at quarterback and is 23-48-2 for 202 yards and two TDs. He is now seeing spot duty at running back, where his combined 216 yards on 80 carries with two TDs leads the team.

Alexis Garrido has started the past three games and is 22-51-3 for 229 yards and one score.

Reece Dunlap (15-175, 1 TD), Janier Puente (12-77, 1 TD) and Brandon Kenyon (7-39, 1 TD) are the top three receivers, with Donald Chavez (44-147), Mark Campos (32-118, 1 TD) and Dunlap (16-88, 2 TDs) have joined Medina in carrying the football.

Campos (38), Medina (35.5), Puente (35), Dunlap (34.5) and Tyler Soll (34.5) are the leading tacklers for a unit that has intercepted five tackles and recovered eight fumbles.

ABOUT THE RAMS — Greene County has been outscored 76-241 this season. Only in an 18-12 week three loss to visiting DC-G have the Rams been within one touchdown at the final horn. The team has produced 611 passing and 926 rushing yards.

Clint Dennhardt is 42-136-6 for 584 yards and four TDs through the air, with Schroeder (14-279, 2 TDs), Logan Lansman (8-165, 1 TD), Chase Stoline (8-87, 1 TD) and Trey Tucker (10-62) have been the primary targets.

Tucker leads the ground game with five TDs and 548 yards on 14 carries. Jake Berns (38-188, 1 TD) and Dennhardt (81-159) lead the ground attack.

The defense has returned one of their six fumble recoveries for a touchdown and has intercepted two passes.

Joe Towers (65.5) is the leading tackler, with Berns (49) and Tucker (44) also active on the defensive side.
