Perry's downtown nightlife is slowly reviving after three months of the virus-enforced and state-ordered lockdown.

Onsite dining and drinking were authorized by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds to resume starting June 12.

Since the governor permitted the reopening June 12 of restaurants and bars, including wedding reception venues, wineries, breweries, distilleries, country clubs and other social or fraternal club, Perry’s nightlife is slowly regaining its former vitality.

“I keep hearing from the merchants,” Perry Mayor John Andorf said Monday, “about how pleased they are with the partnership with the city on the gift cards.” The city of Perry made a $100,000 infusion of Local Option Sales Tax funds into the Perry Chamber of Commerce gift card program as a stimulus to local businesses.

According to the new rules, businesses may serve food and beverages onsite as long as they ensure at least six feet of physical distance between each group of diners or drinkers or each individual dining or drinking alone.

Social distancing of employees and customers is also required, including increased hygiene practices and other public health measures to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19.

Also reopened are Iowa’s fitness centers, casinos and gaming centers, senior citizen centers and adult daycare facilities, salons and barbershops, medical spas, theaters and performance venues, race tracks, malls and other establishments as well as non-school sports and recreational activities and spiritual and religious gatherings.

Nonessential or electives surgeries and medical procedures have also resumed.

  1. Even though our local cities aren’t having real July 4th celebrations, at least private businesses are going to. Plenty of bars are going to have bands and fireworks even if the towns and cities they are in are not. Even this weekend there is a bluegrass festival in Bevington, and in Guthrie County we have a Saturday festival with a metal band. Iowa is open even though some want us to stay inside forever (unless we are protesting something).
