Despite a recent spate of wet weather, the practice field north of Dewey Field is being leveled and reseeded as part of a $35,000 project. Progress is underway fixing the lot, which had deteriorated to the point of being unsafe for student use.

Work is progressing on the rebuilding of the Perry High School practice field north of Dewey Field.

Used by a variety of Perry sports, as well as the Perry Marching Band and others, the field, in its former condition, had deteriorated to the point of being deemed unsafe for further use.

Perry-based No Lawn Left Behind was awarded the contract for the project by the Perry School Board after submitting the lower of two sealed bids submitted for consideration. The contract, for $35,500, was $4,900 lower than the other submitted bid.

Under the terms of the deal, No Lawn Left Behind agreed to spray and kill all vegetation on the field before grading the entire area. A rising slope on the western end of the field will be leveled, while a slight crown will be preserved. The entire surface will be prepared for improved drainage.

A tilling and drill-seeding process will follow. Turf-type fescue will comprise 80 percent of the mixture, with 10 percent being blue grass and 10 percent a perennial rye seed. The field will then be fertilized and hydro-mulched, with the company returning three to four weeks afterward to address any small areas that might require additional seeding.
