Freedom was the main course Saturday morning, with side dishes of pancakes and link sausages at the Freedom for Youth center’s breakfast fundraiser at 1210 Second St. in Perry.
Diana Yepez, site director at the Perry youth center, said turnout was good, and a steady stream of hunger visitors shared a meal and free-will donations with Freedom for Youth.
“We’re happy to be serving needs here in Perry,” said Yepez, a Marhsalltown native and Iowa State University grad. She has directed the center for nearly six months and kept the after-school, evening and weekend programming engaging area youth.
Jessica Evans, north-central regional manager for Freedom for Youth, was also on hand to greet visitors and encourage the youngsters flipping pancakes and serving sausages. Evans, with the help of local volunteers, helped open the Perry Freedom for Youth center in 2013.
Three helpers at Saturday’s breakfast have been regulars at the center since it opened. Justice Moreland, 14, and brothers Tucker Strough, 14, and Dakota Strough, 14, said the center is one of there favorite places to be. The Perry trio flapped the jacks and poured the punch Saturday, happy to be helping serve the community.
Breakfast with Freedom events will occur again Saturday, May 13 and Saturday, June 10.
