New life has been breathed into the old church at 1402 Warford St. since the property was acquired a month ago by the Ebenezer Iglesia Bautista Hispana.
Workers were seen Saturday afternoon atop the church, demolishing the upper portion of the tower at the southwestern corner of the 116-year-old edifice, which served at the Heartland Church of Christ from 1993 to 2000.
It is hoped the workers took shelter before the thunderstorm that rolled through Perry in the mid-afternoon, with lightning, thunder and rain. Lightning has been known to strike in the area, as the steeple of the block’s First Baptist Church was destroyed by lightening in 2014.
