The Lewis Central goalie turns aside the attack of Perry's Ivan Garcia (14) as German Alvarenga (7) closes on the play April 2. Garcia scored twice Friday to lead Perry past host Grinnell.

GRINNELL — After the first 40 minutes of non-conference soccer Friday eighth-ranked Perry and Grinnell were locked in a scoreless battle. When the second 40 minutes had elapsed, the Bluejays had a 4-0 win over the Tigers.

“This was definitely a tale of two halves,” Perry head coach Gary Overla said. “We played a great second half, with more possession and a better view of the field. We were more relaxed and seemed to play more loosely.”

Ivan Garcia opened the scoring by finding the back of the net in the 45th minute off a David Cardenas assist, with Jesus Rodriguez beating the keeper off a Jeffry Gutierrez pass in the 58th minute.

The Cardenas-to-Garcia combo struck again in the 68th minute for a 3-0 Perry lead, with Cardenas stretching the onion bag on an unassisted goal in the 74th minute.

Overla noted “The junior varsity played well” in claiming a 2-0 win. They will host a tourney at the Perry Athletic Complex Saturday.

The Bluejay varsity will attempt to defend Dewey Field twice next week when they host Bondurant-Farrar Tuesday and Boone Thursday. Action on both dates begins with a JV contest at 5:30 p.m.
