Strong showing from PAWS at state meet

GRINNELL –The Perry Area Winter Swim team had an excellent outing Saturday at the state swim meet, with three members winning championships while a total of six secured the right to advance to the regional meet. Along the way, PAWS totaled 33 personal-bests to highlight a successful season.

Head coach Haley Vaughn won the 200 Individual Medley in 2 minutes, 28.07 seconds in the girls Open division. Vaughn was also second in the 100 IM and 100 breaststroke.

Ethan Winey won the boys 13-14 50 backstroke in 32.87, was second in the 50 free and finished fourth in the 100 backstroke, while Sophia McDevitt claimed the girls 9-10 100 back title in 1:23.86. McDevitt was fourth in both the 50 butterfly and 100 IM.

Medals and ribbons were awarded to those placing in first through 12th place. Advancing to regionals (based upon qualifying times) were Haley Vaughn, Sarah Vaughn and McDevitt for the girls, with Devon, Chase and Riese Archer all moving on for the PAWS boys.

Breanna Penenger was second in the Open 200 freestyle and sixth in the 100 IM while shaving an impressive six seconds off her 500 free time for a new PB of 6:17.83, which earned third place.

Amanda Holwegner was 10th in the 50 free and 12th in the 100 free, Dannah Karolus third in the 50 fly, 10th in the 50 back and 11th in the 100 free, with Sarah Vaughn sixth in the 100 back. All swim in the 13-14 class.

Jaylene Karolus (11-12) was sixth in both the 50 free and 100 back and 10th in the 100 free, with Quin Mahler (9-10) 11th in the 50 breaststroke.

The 13-14 free relay of Abby Herman, Holwegner, Dannah Karolus and Sarah Vaughn was sixth, with Sarah Vaughn, Avery Miner, Holwegner and Herman ninth in the medley relay.

The 11-12 foursome of Jaylene Karolus, Laura Merz, Hailey Meacham and Shekynah Haworth were 10th in the free relay, with the 9-10 medley relay unit of McDevitt, Mahler, Lilly Riley and Emily Dowd placing seventh.

Devon Archer and Caleb Winey competed in the boys Open, with the former second in the 50 fly and third in both the 100 back and 200 IM while the latter was second in the 50 breaststroke, third in the 100 IM and fifth in the 50 free.

Chase Archer (13-14) was second in the 100 IM, fifth in the 50 breaststroke and seventh in the 100 free, with Drew Storey (13-14) fifth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free.

Andrew Dowd was second in the 100 IM and 100 free and fourth in the 100 breaststroke, with Dylan Winey seventh in the 50 fly and eighth in the 50 back while Riese Archer was fourth in the 50 back. All swim in the 11-12 division.

The quartet of Dowd, Archer, Winey and Garrett Winey combined for third place in the medley relay and fourth in the free relay while the Open foursome of Devon Archer, Caleb Winey, Ethan Winey and Storey finished third in the medley relay.
