The Perry High School Student Advisory Council has started to leave a real mark on their school, an impact that has recently taken on a visible, physical nature.

Signs and posters promoting “The Bluejay Way” and how to embody “The Spirit of a Bluejay” are prominently displayed around the school. Other new additions included the overhead “We Are Perry” signage in corridors and, perhaps most prominently, along an entire section of the athletic hallway north of the gym.

Local business Graphics 2U provided the applique, which uses the update, more modern Bluejay logo as well as a wide range of individual words, all chosen by students as having a meaningful approach to being a Bluejay.

The Student Advisory Council (SAC) is composed of 20-25 students in grades 10-12. All most be involved in at least two extracurricular activities and be willing to meet the first Friday of each month with Activities Director Tom Lipovac.

Those meetings help facilitate communication between students and faculty and have generated numerous advantages for both.

The SAC is determined to improve communication not only between students and staff but also with school staff, parents and the community. The advocate activities participation and promote the benefits of being involved. Other aims include service learning, the promotion of school pride, spirit and support along with increased sportsmanship. The SAC promotes all school activities, is involved in association, district and department policy reviews and helps bring to the forefront issues facing today’s students and student activities.

Lipovac said he could not be prouder of the devotion to PHS shown by the SAC and noted that, because the group does no fundraising and has generally worked somewhat “out of the public eye” many may be unaware of all the group has, and is, doing to improve many aspects of being a Perry student.

Past activities in which the SAC has been involved include: participation surveys, “Do’s and Dont’s” advice for parents and staff, “Respect the Game” announcements, Stuff the Stands with Staff Night, Vintage Night, Walk of Fame, school exchanges, school ambassadors, presentations to sixth and eighth grade students, freshman orientation, visiting and sharing with civic organizations and attending leadership conferences.

The SAC has also been involved with the Activities Department website www.bluejayactivities.org and the Twitter account @phsbluejayway.

The PHS Student Advisory Council were the driving force behind the redecorating of one section of the athletic hallway. The words were submitted by students as meaningful traits of being a Bluejay.
