The Port kitchen damaged by out-of-control grease fire

PANORA, Iowa — A grease fire got out of control in the kitchen of the Port restaurant on Lake Panorama Sunday about 4:45 p.m. and caused extensive damage before brought under control by firefighters from Panora and Guthrie Center.

There were no injuries in the incident, according to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s office.

Initial reports said the grease fire ignited the kitchen walls of the lakefront business at 5405 Chimra Road in Panora.

The building was evacuated after the start of the fire, which firefighters appeared to contain to the kitchen area and the attic space above the kitchen.

The Port restaurant opened in 1975. It was bought in 2005 Menadue Development LC, according to Guthrie County records.

The Panora Volunteer Fire Department, Guthrie Center Volunteer Fire Department, Panora EMS, Guthrie County Sheriff’s office, Panora Police Department and Lake Panorama Security responded to the incident.
